How to make Classic Southern Chicken and Dumplings in the instant Pot
-
Begin by cutting the frozen buttermilk biscuits into quarters.
-
Place the quartered biscuits and shredded chicken into your Instant Pot.
-
Pour 4 cups of chicken broth into the Instant Pot, ensuring that the biscuits and chicken are covered by the broth.
-
Set the Instant Pot to "sealing" mode, not venting.
-
Select the "Manual" or "Pressure Cook" setting on high pressure for 8 minutes.
-
Once the cooking time is complete, perform a quick release by carefully turning the steam release valve to venting position when the pressure valve goes down.
-
After releasing the pressure and it's safe to do so, open the lid of the Instant Pot.
-
Stir in the cream, sweet peas, carrots, Italian seasoning, garlic salt, and Greek seasoning.
-
Continue to stir until the mixture reaches your desired thickness. If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can add an additional cup of chicken broth.
-
Serve the chicken and dumplings hot, garnished with extra seasoning if desired.

How to make Classic Southern Chicken and Dumplings On The Stovetop
-
In a large pot or Dutch oven, add the 4 cups of chicken broth and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
-
Add the shredded chicken to the simmering broth and stir to combine. Allow the chicken to heat through.
-
While the chicken is heating, prepare the dumplings. Take the quartered frozen buttermilk biscuits and drop them into the simmering broth one at a time, stirring gently after each addition to prevent sticking.
-
Cover the pot and let the dumplings simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are cooked through and no longer doughy in the center. Stir occasionally.
-
While the dumplings are cooking, in a separate saucepan, heat the cream over low heat. If desired, you can add 2 tablespoons of butter for added richness.
-
When the dumplings are fully cooked and the cream is warmed, add the warmed cream to the pot, followed by the sweet peas, carrots, Italian seasoning, garlic salt, and Greek seasoning. Stir gently to combine.
-
Continue to simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the peas and carrots to heat through.
-
Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
-
Serve hot, and enjoy!~

Classic Southern Chicken and Dumplings Tips
Use High-Quality Chicken Broth:
-
The quality of your chicken broth can greatly impact the flavor of your dish. If possible, use homemade chicken broth or a high-quality store-bought version for the best results.
-
Season Generously: Don't be shy with your seasonings. Chicken and Dumplings benefit from well-seasoned broth and dumplings. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed.
Fresh Herbs:
-
If you have fresh herbs on hand, consider using them to enhance the flavor. Herbs like thyme, rosemary, and parsley can add a burst of freshness to your dish.
Homemade Dumplings:
-
While frozen biscuits are convenient, making dumplings from scratch with simple ingredients like flour, baking powder, salt, and buttermilk can take your dish to the next level in terms of texture and flavor.
Shredded Chicken:
-
If you have leftover roasted or rotisserie chicken, it can be a great option for this recipe. The flavor of pre-cooked chicken can be more intense and add depth to the dish.
Creamy Consistency:
-
Adjust the amount of cream or dairy to achieve your desired level of creaminess. Some prefer a thicker, creamier texture, while others like it more broth-like.
Fresh Vegetables:
-
If you prefer fresh vegetables over canned ones, you can use them. Just chop and cook them a bit longer to ensure they're tender.
Optional Extras:
-
Feel free to customize your dish with optional extras like diced onions, celery, or bell peppers for added flavor and texture.
Spice It Up:
-
If you enjoy a little heat, add some red pepper flakes, hot sauce, or cayenne pepper to the recipe for a spicy kick.
Don't Overmix Dumplings:
-
When adding the dumplings to the broth, be gentle and avoid overmixing. Overmixing can lead to dense and tough dumplings.
Let It Rest:
-
Allow your Chicken and Dumplings to rest for a few minutes after cooking. This can help the flavors meld and the dumplings to absorb some of the delicious broth.
Garnish:
-
Garnish your finished dish with fresh herbs, grated Parmesan cheese, or a sprinkle of your favorite seasoning for an extra pop of flavor and presentation.
